mucinex commercial

the following mucinex commercial is a prime example of an all pathos rhetorical strategy. during the commercial the people displayed are in a home that of course gives of the sense of our own home where we get the feeling of comfort and protection setting up the commercial for what its trying to sell. the mucus build-up is also depicted as a "fat slob" that of course many of us find annoying from the beggining. the type of voices are also loud and obnoxious intesifying the feelings that are trying to be created of desperation and anger. then once the product itself is presented the voice again is calm and soothing and the child eating it seems rather eager appealing to the sense of relief since it seams as this is the answer to get rid of this pestering body fluid. no where through the commercial is there any sign of how the product works or the science behind it which then holds no logos. and the product itself isnt well known and none of the characters are seemingly popular. thus the ethos in the commercial is void. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txMlnhjBXEI

Annotations of the sociometer

Pass, J., LIndenberg, S., & Park, J. (2010). All you need is love: Is the sociometer especially sensitve to one's mating capacity?. European Journal of Social Psychology, 40(2), 221-234. Retrived from Academic Search Complete database.

The following source tests the idea that the sociometer (later defined as the "meter" used to measure the feelings of self worth and social acceptance in an individual through effects of its community or environment) is in essence much more sensitive to an individuals mating capacity than to ones capacity to make friends. Never the less, both scenarios affect an individuals self esteem and create differences in an individuals sociometer. The tests performed in this source also map out the differences between genders and different scenarios, such as short term negative/positive responses and long term negative/postive responses, and their contrasting differences in effects to the sociometer. This source gives information on jargon, history, and basic information on the subject of interpersonal relationships, the importance of them in social environments, and the effects they can have on individuals. The source doesnt focus directly on an adolescent spectrum but does give insight into the general bias that takes place naturally in adults which can be associated with a younger group.

sources sources and more sources!

So we found our topic for the semester, and it seams the easy part of the assignment is over. Now begins the part of the essay that we all seem to find most, "dreary," the research. Last class we had to try and find 10 sources on our topic and post them, well you'd be surprised how difficult it is to search for information on a more general topic then it is on a more specific topic. It is usually true that the easiest sources to find are always the internet sources, due to the fact our generation was born with "search engine" tattooed to our fore heads, and of course, book sources are usually the hardest to find since your never sure of any source you reach due to the fact you need to read the book first before you know if its a helpful source or not. Being more specific will definately make searching for sources a lot easier, like instead of putting human relationships in the search engine try typing in student/teacher relationships. usually you'll get closer to the type of information your trying to get if your more specific on what you want.

An annotation is basically the summary of information that the reader can write either formally or informally to educate the next reader on what the information is basically about. An annotation usually includes 1 or 2 details on the reading and a summary on the information displayed in the reading as well. Annotations usually are a few sentences long.

TOPIC?

After thinking long and hard about my topic, i finally thought my topic should be something that doesnt just affect people here in el paso but people everywhere in every city, state, country and continent something that has created time and war, happiness and freedom, slavery and death. relationships between humans and how they affect the individual and how being isolated from human relationships affects the mind and the spirit. how human relationships has created and advanced society and organizations such as religion and govt and also corrupted them. this topic is important to everyone not just me, but its definately something i began to think about alot due to the recent death of a close friend of mine. her relationship to me has affected me in a way that i never knew i could be affected. i've never suffered a death by someone close to me, especially someone so close to me such as a fellow dance major and friend that i would see everyday in class laugh, smile, cry in pain as we sat in our splits, or grow frustrated due to the inability to perform an echape soute combination so intricate that even the teacher couldnt say it. to lose someone you once saw live is very traumatic and puts me to think how human relationships affect humans and wether its a positive impact or a negative one. are human relationships worth it? are the good times worth the bad times they create? i want to understand the reason why we advanced more than any other animal in this world, what was the original reason for becoming a society and not a "lone predator" like many other species in this world. society, which most of us work so hard to fit into, is the basis of human relationships and its important to understand why we do the i the things we do in this world.

Educational Propaganda in The Virtual World

Before, going to college wasn't done by just anyone, you were either extremely intelligent or extremely wealthy, or both. Things have changed though in the past decade or two, it is now becoming more of a norm and an expectation to go to college or some sort of secondary school after high school. with this new idea coming into play, many schools start to become competitive in order to achieve more prestige than others by recruiting the "best" students and in order to do so they begin to commercialize what their curriculum can offer to make it more appealing for future alumni. Some examples can be taken from the schools website where everything is commercial in order to attract more attention. two examples can be taken from UTEP and FSU's websites. UTEP's website is colored with the schools colors and has banners of some of the students of the school all over the website which actually helps emphasize UTEP's educational goal, anybody can get a degree. they accept almost all students into their school and assist them with paying for their classes to make it possible for almost anybody to get a degree in their field of choice if they really wanted to. FSU is more prominent and has more prestige usually and thus displays their school as such with quotes in their introduction as, "The best teachers teaching only the best students..." and the pictures and banners present their achievements overall as a school. in all these two school basically are opposites with what type of student they attract but both none the less use propaganda to advocate their curriculum and in essence increase the student alumni.

Discourse Communities and Some Writing (*.*)

1. humans are social beings, and with that said we have tendencies to group together. each group differs from one to another usually, but from within the group, people tend to have the similar aspirations, languages, physical and emotional characteristics, and other things such as music, theatre, or even forms of communication. this is what we would call a discourse community.
2.Russel Baker found his calling to become a writer in high school after going through what most people would call an epiphany, he got a sudden burst of inspiration that led him to realize what he was most passionate about in this world. i can say that it was maybe the same thing for me as far as finding my passion for dancing. at age 12 i started dancing ballroom, salsa. i danced because my parents were Hispanic and they wanted to teach me a little bit about my culture. there was no way i liked it at all, i wasn't even any good at it. one day i went to a quincenera and someone asked me out to dance, i said hey i learned a few things why not? when we got out to the dance floor everything ended as a disaster. i stubbed her toe elbowed her shoulder and made her fall when i spun her. after all of that she stopped me and said, "you need to learn to dance." and walked away, leaving me alone on the dance floor. ever since that day i vowed i would never go through such an embarrassing moment again, i started taking real dance classes at studios, and as i continued i realized i really did like dancing. through one moment i discovered my passion maybe not exactly like Russel Baker but close enough.
